As members of the American Morgan Horse Association, we are committed to this fundamental purpose: "To perpetuate the
Morgan breed of horse by preserving the original blood and type; rather than by effort to bring about improvement or change
in size, speed or other features." (Purpose of The Morgan Horse Club, 1909)
The GoMorgans Team was proud
to strongly support the Derivative Action brought by 49 life members of the AMHA. After almost two years the AMHA and plaintiffs
signed a court-approved settlement agreement. The major element of the agreement was proposed bylaws changes (Item #3 on the
ballot) that would have ensured a balanced board for the first time ever. All members would have had FAIR
and EQUAL representation. If AMHA were operating in a fair, ethical, honest, open manner we would never have needed
a "Derivative Action" filed on behalf of the membership in the first place.
The AMHA
board organized its biggest campaign ever to get out the “show” vote. The GoMorgans website, chat rooms,
individual emails and phone calls spread the truth. Many grassroots people joined last year for the sole purpose of voting
in the election. Once again, however, a significant number simply chose not to get involved, not to vote, and Item #3 was
defeated.
In addition,
Item #2 (eliminating term limits for directors) was approved. This
allows a director to run as many times as he/she wants – and it would be next to impossible to unseat an incumbent.
Do we really want powerful, self-serving directors to serve for life? Where is the fairness, the democracy, the ethics?
AMHA is now 100% show-dominated. Its future is in serious jeopardy. The “draft Statement of Financial Position 12-31-10” reports that
AMHA lost over 500 members last year! With total gross wages (excluding the executive director) of $510,009 and staff of 12,
this averages out to an annual salary of $42,500, not including benefits! This is simply unsustainable. WHY isn’t the
executive director’s salary included? This was agreed to in the mediation agreement, but once again, the show board
chose NOT to do the right thing – obey a court order.
Will members who believe
in Justin Morgan abandon AMHA and its continued support of the mixed-blood “modern Morgan show horse”? Will true
believers establish independent clubs, focus groups, websites, newsletters, online marketing, etc. to promote the traditional
Morgan? Will there be an attempt to establish an independent, credible, honest registry? The future of the breed is in the
bloodlines of Justin Morgan and with those who treasure his legacy.
